Promise 2: Safe Places
Kids deserve safe schools and safe neighborhoods. Though it seems like kids are in school most of the time, there are a lot of hours and days when kids aren’t in class and might not have family members at home to be with them. All kids need to have access to quality after school programs and weekend and summer activities.
Did You Know?
On School days, the hours of 3pm – 6pm are peak hours for juvenile crime.
Almost 1 in 8 youth ages 8-18 discovered that someone they were communicating with online was an adult pretending to be much younger (Soure: Polly Klass Foundation, Feb. 2006)
Children who witness crime and violence are more likely to experience social and emotional problems such as aggression, stress, and withdrawal, as well as delinquency and low school achievement. (Source: Future of Children)
The most common activity for children after school is watching television; on average 23 hours a week.
