Congratulations to everyone who participated in Northview's Eco Challenge! You made Northview proud and took an important role in raising awareness about energy conservation in our school community.
The judging process was extremely difficult, but the judges have made their decisions and the winners are as follows:

Northview's Eco Challenge
You’ve watched “An Inconvenient Truth”. You’ve seen the live presentation by Anne Parker. Now you can get involved by taking action. Northview’s Eco Challenge organized by the Grade 12 CyberARTS class will be holding a competition on energy conservation within our school. Prizes will be awarded for the best proposal/project for each age group. ALL SUBMISSIONS MUST BE ORIGINAL WORK.
Contest # 1
Make an Action Plan
The goal of Real Solutions for An Inconvenient Truth project is to have students develop ideas on how to save energy within the school. The project is hosted on staging.zazengo.com a website dedicated to people who make a difference in our society.
For students in grades 9 – 10:
Build an action plan to reduce Northview Heights’ environmental footprint.
- 2 pages or more is required
For students in grade 11 – 12:
Build an action plan to reduce Northview Heights’ environmental footprint.
- 4 pages or more is required
Contest # 2 Inspire -> Awareness -> Action
Design a poster to promote energy conservation. It can contain information on facts or figures on energy use. The poster will give people ideas on how to save energy, whether you focus on one topic (example: light bulbs) or energy saving as a whole. The poster will be judged on its effectiveness and design.
OR
Take a picture of an event that you organized to help conserve energy (for example: tree planting, home audit- changing to energy efficient bubs, etc.). Incorporate that picture into a poster that communicates ideas about how to conserve energy.
Requirements
Minimum paper size is 8.5 x 11”. If digital the file needs to be 300 ppi and saved as a jpeg. All content must be appropriate for a high school audience. The overall impression should be “eye catching”.
The artwork will be judged in 2 categories for junior (grades 9 and 10) and senior (grades 11 and 12) categories
Contest #3 -
T-Shirt Design
Design a T-shirt to promote energy conservation.
Requirements
The design needs to be bold and stand out.
A slogan promoting energy conservation must be a part of the design.
The design will be judged on creativity and impact.
There are no age categories for this contest.
The design must be appropriate for a high school audience.
How to enter the challenge:
- Register on Zazengo (see FAQS for help).
- Join the “Real Solutions for an Inconvenient Truth” project , and Northview Organization.
- Create a new project and upload all the contest information under discussion, stories, etc. (see guide on how to make a new project).
- Link your project to the "Northview Heights Secondary School" organization, by going to "Edit" -> "Associated Organizations" -> "Available Organizations", and select Northview. Click Update Project.
Deadline:
All submissions must be uploaded by Wednesday, December 12, 2007 for judging. Also submit a hard copy of your work to room 144 by this date along with the entry form.
Proposal Judging:
- Prizes will be awarded to the best project in each age group.
- The judging committee will consist of environmental specialists from the community, student representative from NHSS, and our principal.
- Judges will give points for originality, practicality and creativity.
- Special consideration will be given to the most active projects (the most members signed on, updated discussions, active action list etc.).
Winners will be announced on a school announcement, and posted on staging.zazengo.com.
Prizes:
The prizes that will be awarded include:
- iPods - for individual participants winners
- Movie tickets – for group projects winners
- Pizza Lunch – for a winning class project
